Diversion Summer Game Jam Winners: Three Games, Three Stories

Diversion Summer Game Jam Winners: Three Games, Three Stories
Arturo Nereu

Diversion hosted its summer game jam, and after 20 entries and community voting, we have our winners.

We reached out to the top 3 teams to hear about their games and how they used Diversion to bring their ideas to life.

The winners:

1. Wafin
2.
Branches
3.
Fork River

Each team won Steam gift cards, plus we'll cover their Steam publishing fees if they decide to release their games.

The common theme? All three teams talked about the joy of making games in a jam, working with new people, trying new ideas, and experimenting with new tools.

We asked the winners about their games and their experience with Diversion, these are their responses.

1st Place: Wafin

What’s the story behind your game? How did you come up with the idea?

It all began with ideas swirling in our minds, stories we could bring to life in just a few days using 3D, centered around a branching topic. Paloma and Fabrizio started drafting, while Geek contributed key points to connect the narrative. Our goal was to create a story where, through subtle hints, a character could discover something meaningful. Memories of impactful stories surfaced in Paloma’s mind and were shared, but it was up to all of us to shape them into something that truly shines, then was the time to do the gameplay, where we met our friend Ruben, who helped with the gameplay and the logic thought into reality. The true love for Hachiko and never managed to finish the movie because it was just too heartbreaking. We wanted to give him a different ending. One that connects with the idea of branching paths and carries all the beauty of those memories into new possibilities of recovery. The idea came from wanting to create a dynamic game with a well-crafted combat system in the short time we had. Paloma suggested making the protagonist a dog and combined both ideas: a dog searching for its owner facing enemies and solving puzzles along the way.

Compared to other version control systems you’ve used, what stood out about Diversion?

How easy and intuitive it was. The Unreal Engine plugin made the workflow smooth and efficient, allowing the team to work directly without complications. Uploading and syncing files was simple and fast, which helped maintain a good pace throughout development. Its user-friendly interface also made it easier for team members with basic GitHub knowledge to adapt quickly and collaborate effectively.

2nd Place: Branches

How would you describe your game in one sentence?

You are sitting in your room, trying to get your code to work and merge the final branch before committing the final code, as parasitic plants and branches stalk you from behind.

Would you recommend Diversion to other indie developers? Why?

I have already recommended it to like 10 other people haha. My personal experience with Diversion has been amazing, and even if there are any issues, their support is super fast and on Discord as well, so no going back and forth on emails!

3rd Place: Fork River

Tell us a bit about our game

My game is about a river with a lot of branches, you can choose which path you want to take! It has a lot of endings and different themes in each path.

Was there a particular feature of Diversion you found especially useful?

The revert to commit function, I used it when I changed and deleted something, so I reverted to avoid problems
